FIFA World Cup 2018 host team Russia defeated 2010 champions Spain for the first time in the penalty shootout by 4-3 in an exciting match and advances to the quarter-final. This was the 7th overall match and first match in World Cup played between Russia and Spain.
Spain got in the lead in the 12th minute by the suicidal goal of Sergei Ignashevich. But Russia ties the score in the first half from a penalty. By the end of the second half, both teams couldn’t goal. Even after the extra time the score remained 1-1.
Igor Akinfeev becomes Russia’s hero against Spain
In the penalty shoot, Russian goalkeeper and Captain Igor Akinfeev saved two penalties. In the last penalty he dived on his right side but when he saw the ball going in the opposite direction he kicked it away while diving and protected the goal.
Igor Akinfeev became the highest rated player in this match with 7.24 rating. Russia reached in the quarterfinal for the first time after the collapse of Soviet Union in 1991.
